Samurai Jack: Season 5 by Genndy Tartakovsky (Lucky-Loki)
Lucky-Loki: The comic Head Lopper has a lot in common with the television series Samurai Jack, particularly in its more mature final season: The lone warrior wanderer in the lush fantasy surroundings, the stylicized artwork, the combination of (often outright silly) humour with dark themes and dire stakes.… (more)

This is visually interesting with what is a deceptively simplified style that falls between Mike Mignola’s Hellboy and Jeff Smith’s Bone, yet displays some complex story telling craft. It is also aided by some skillful coloring to give it a sense of place and tone.

But I never really engaged with the story. The overall plot device felt like a sub-par Witcher story, hero guy with big sword hired to kill monsters, and nor did I care about any of the characters who all felt as flat as their cartoon style renditions. ( )

Solid fun, with a lovely blend of humour and serious storytelling. The take on the undefeatable lone barbarian warrior might not be particularly original (though his visual with the huge white beard is a fun touch), but the dynamic of his constant bickering with the chatty decapitated witch's head he carries about adds a lot of distinctive flair and personality to the story anyway. The artwork is at times really pretty and cool, at times highly stylicised, both of which work -- though I'm a bit less happy with some panels where an in-between style is attempted, making some things look involuntarily silly (the protagonist's face disappearing in white hair in relatively close-up frames for instance) or action hard to follow. Thankfully, these are fairly far between.

This is fun sword and sorcery with a big dollop of humour, and I'm looking forward to when I have the time to check out the remaining volumes. ( )

Exceptionally fun, fast-paced story in the low-fantasy mode with solid supernatural elements and featuring barbarian heroes, evil witches, ferocious beasts, and dark gods. Employing great animated-style art, bold colors, and fantastic design work, this is a great looking book and awesome read. Highly recommended to fans of the Conan archetype and sword & sorcery stories. ( )
