I am just as much a fan of Nigel as any besotted viewer. In the book I explore why we love dogs and what they mean to us emotionally and domestically. I look back on all the dogs in my life - all of which I have loved deeply and which have been an essential part of my life. So, this is the book of Nigel - but also the book of all our dogs in every British family and a celebration of the deep love we feel for them' Monty Don show lessTags

I do not care all that much about dogs. And I generally had no idea what Monty Don was talking about when he described his garden projects. And I got the impression that I was supposed to know a great deal more than I do about the BBC show Gardeners' World (for example, that it exists).
However, I really enjoyed watching two seasons of Big Dreams, Small Spaces, and got a kick out of how worshipful everyone on the show was of this gardening instructor, and I was charmed by this book for similar reasons: it vividly presents a life experience that is very different from my own, and it is supremely affable.

Entertaining story of the dogs in Monty Don's life, expecially Nigel the golden retriever. The backdrop is the evolution of his house and garden in Herefordshire from ruin and rough ground to extensive sophisticated multi-faceted garden, featured in Gardeners' World. Never having watched the TV programme it would have been nice to have a plan of the various gardens or an aerial view to get a beter sense of the layout. Also before and after photos would have been interesting.
