The third book in the Kiwis at War series, following on from '1914: Riding Into War' by Susan Brocker and '1915: Wounds of War' by Diana Menefy. Dunedin Scot Leith McArran is part of the Otago Mounted Rifles serving during World War I. He and his fellow soldiers who survived Gallipoli are combined with Maori contingents and form part of the New Zealand Division. However, far from shooting at the enemy, they find themselves digging the vast trench network. They are first sent to Armentieres, and then to the Somme. At first both sides are extremely wary of each other, but Leith makes friends with underage orphan and Maori soldier Tamati Baines who suffers nightmares that sometimes turn out to be prophetic. As the two sides get to know each other, and experience the loss of their companions, a mutual respect grows. The addition of a contents page, maps, a timeline, glossary, historical note, authors note and photographs serve to make this a valuable resource. Highly recommended. ( ) no reviews | add a review

"They barely know each other, M?ori and Pakeha, traumatized veterans and wide-eyed new recruits, thrown together from all corners of New Zealand, a country so young it barely conceives of itself as a nation. But they've arrived in a war like no other: the Great War, a maelstrom of fire, poison gas, artillery, and newly created weapons like aircraft and tanks. They're armed only with their picks and shovels. They are the New Zealand Pioneer Battalion, they're going to dig their way into history, yard by yard" --Publisher's information.
