When I received this book I really was looking forward to reading it as I don't very often read Christian Romance these days, so I thought it would be good to branch back into that genre again. It comes across as a pretty typical Christian Romance book set in a Quaker community. Generally the writing style is easy to read and the chapters are relatively short. However, it read like a typical formulaic romance story so it sounded just like any other romance story on the market. The other part of this book that I had huge problems with was the language used. I grew up reading the King James Version of the Bible so I am not unused to old English, however, in this book I found the use of the ‘Thee’ was way overdone for my liking. Perhaps because I haven’t grown up speaking like this it was a bit hard for me to get my head around so it became more of a nuisance to me. If you want to gain a bit of an insight into the Quaker way of life then this will give you that. Unfortunately it just wasn’t for me. ( )

Rebecca Albright, lives on her Quaker family’s farm near Philadelphia during a tumultuous time as the Civil War is brewing. Through circumstances she created her father demands that she nurse the man who he shot back to health. When the man becomes conscious they discover he has amnesia. The family’s only course of action is to help him recover, gain his strength, and hopefully regain his memory so he can return from wherever he came from. Rebecca is quite reluctant and wants nothing to do with him accept to dress his wounds and feed him. She struggles with how her faith fits in with the slavery issue, how she as a woman can assist in the Underground Railroad, and also, keep from involving her emotions with this unknown man under her care. Does God have plans for her? It seems He does but she will need to trust him on Sunset Ridge. I really enjoyed this novel by Sharlene MacLaren!

I received a copy from the The Book Club Network and the author. All thoughts are my own. I was not compensated for this review. ( )

I did like the setting of the book as I love to read about times just before and during the war. The tension is high among the people . The Civil War is on everyone's mind and I loved that it was focused on the Quakers. It seems like there are not many books about the Quakers, but the author did an amazing job of giving facts that helped me understand their lifestyle. I did have a bit of a problem with the thees and thous but it was only my ignorance of how people talked during that time period. I liked that the author held true to the time period and made the story more interesting. I find as I read historical fiction, I always get some very intriguing facts that make me want to research the subject more.

The characters were so good and I loved how each one played an important part in the story. Rebecca was my favorite. I loved her determination and heart she had for the Underground Railroad. I really enjoyed learning more about it and it really opened my eyes to the plight of those who were desperate for freedom. Rebecca's parents have made arrangements for her to marry. I had to stop for a minute and think about that. Could you marry someone you didn't love or know? The Bible says to " honor your mother and father" so what will Rebecca do?

When Rebecca meets Clay she is definitely smitten. What is she to do since she is engaged? Rebecca has many decisions to make and also realizes that Clay is not a Quaker. I can't imagine the turmoil someone goes through to try to do the right thing while having feelings that may go against their religion.

The author weaves a beautiful story that shows us how making Godly choices can sometimes be hard, but are always rewarding.

I received a copy of this book from The BookClub Network. The review is my own opinion. ( )

This story is set just before the Civil War. It shows how one family, even one person, can make a difference in someones life. Even though I don't know much about the Quakers, I felt that they were portrayed as true Christians and that they strive to live their lives as such. The book, although Christian in nature, was not a preachy sort of book. It does not cram beliefs down your throat as some books do but shows God's love in a most positive manner

This book is very well written. The characters are very well developed and you feel like you actually know them. The book draws you in from the very beginning and kept me fully interested to the very end. In fact, I hated for it to end.

The editing, one of the things that can make or break a book for me, was well done. Not perfect, as the last error I remember is a missing word, a noticeably missing word. But, in general, the editing was far superior to many of the books I have read.

If you enjoy historical fiction you will surely enjoy this book. I reviewed this book of my own free will. It was given to me through Bookfun.org. ( )

I love when an author writes a great book with Quakers in it. This was a wonderful story. I love reading about the Civil War and the quakers part in it. I loved Rebecca and Clay. Rebecca learns many lessons in growing up. Clay learns many also. They are great together. I hope there might be more books located in Sunset Ridge. I received a copy of this book from Celebratelit for a fair and honest opinion which I gave of my own free will. ( )
