This is a beautiful coffee-table book for those who want to trace their heritage from the British Isles. It was fun to leaf through this large volume and imagine all the resources for finding out about ones ancestry. It gives a different look at history that I found welcome -- a sort of people's history.

Kathy Chater is a well-known family historian who has made a particular study of Huguenot immigration to the UK and black British history. As well as lecturing and writing articles on these subjects, she is the author of several books including Tracing Your Family Tree in England, Scotland, Ireland and Wales, Finding Out About Your Family History show more (with Simon Fowler) and Untold Histories: Black People in England and Wales During the Period of the British Slave Trade, c. 1660-1812, which was her doctoral thesis. show less
