Sofia Khan is just married. But no-one told her life was going to be this way ...Her living situation is in dire straits, her husband Conall is distant and his annoyingly attractive colleague is ringing all sorts of alarm bells. When her mother forces them into a belated wedding ceremony (elopement: you can run, but you can't hide), Sofia wonders if it might be a chance to bring them together. But when it forces Conall to confess his darkest secret, it might just tear them apart. An audiobook to make you smile, laugh and cry, this is the story of a mixed-race marriage and a mixed-up family, for anyone who's ever struggled to balance their pride with their principles, or stuck around to try to mend a broken heart. Instead, this book doesn’t end the way I was expecting it to. I can’t remember the last time I was disappointed so intensely, so viscerally, by an ending! (Actually I think I was fifteen.) Intellectually I can recognise how the ending fits the narrative, especially given the way Sofia’s grief affects so much of what happens, but I was not in the right headspace to appreciate it.
“Sofe. You’re always telling us not to rush into things. Trust you to go and get carried away.”
“Excuse me. I’m still very much in command of my actions and feelings.”
She laughed. “Yeah, all right, love.”
Suddenly I wondered where my head had been the past few months.
“It’s fine. You always have been single-minded,” she said.
I wasn’t sure if she meant that I was focused, or that I’ve always had the mind of a single person. ( )
