Description

Action thriller by the classic adventure writer set in the islands of the Caribbean. Tom Mangan was a sharply successful entrepreneur who lured the super-rich to his luxury hotels in the sun-soaked Bahamas. Then violent tragedy struck: his own family disappeared, and a series of misfortunes, accidents and mysterious epidemics began to drive the tourists away and wreck Mangan's livelihood. Fatally, he becomes determined to confront his enemy - and the hunt is on...

Although it was written in 1980, Bahama Crisis by Desmond Bagley describes a side of life in the Bahamas that may still sound familiar. When a wealthy Bahamanian executive joins forces with an old friend to grow his tourism businesses, his life immediately becomes more complicated. His wife and daughter disappear at sea and his various enterprises seem to be sabotaged to discourage tourists from coming to the Bahamas. The action is fast-paced, with questions of murder, terrorism, and the importance of tourism to the Bahamas. A page-turner.

Murder and shady business deals in the Bahamas spill over into mainland america when a daughter of a famous business empire is kidnapped. Fortunetly the anti-capitalists from russia are defeated. Readable but hardly believable. Light fiction for a quick read.
The problem with thrillers -- even ones by a pro like Bagley -- is that you don't know till the Big Reveal whether they are going to work or not. In this case: NO.

(On the other hand, I love well-traveled books, and this is my prize so far: A British paperback to begin with, it has a stamp on the endpaper showing that it passed through a used book store in -- Bangkok! No doubt purchased there by someone who needed something to read on the long flight to Washington DC, where I found it in a thrift shop.)
A dismal effort from an otherwise a good thriller writer. The plot starts in the 2nd gear and remains the same throughout.

In my opinion, [b:Wyatt's Hurricane|129828|Wyatt's Hurricane|Desmond Bagley|http://photo.goodreads.com/books/1171989517s/129828.jpg|3098688] and [b:The Golden Keel|129833|The Golden Keel|Desmond Bagley|http://photo.goodreads.com/books/1171989521s/129833.jpg|125045] are his better books (I have read only 4 of his books).
Enjoyable first person thriller set in the Bahamas. Quite lightweight.
