Description

Action thriller by the classic adventure writer set in South America. Jeremy Wheale's well-ordered life is blasted apart when his brother is murdered. The killer was after a family heirloom - an antique gold tray - which sets Wheale on a trail from Devon to the tropical rainforest of Yucatan. There he joins the hunt for a lost Mayan city. Neale Clive Cussler is the the modern day adventure writer - Inca Gold is a great read and has diving and other adventurous escapades. More action than Bagley.

Standard, workmanlike adventure story from this genre author, who sold well in his day. The story concerns Inca gold with the usual skullduggery and some romance thrown in. Still readable, though you really notice the level of technology that was exciting in 1975.
He had me with the use of "subfusc", in an adventure story in which howler monkeys are involved.
A ridiculous premise, but entertaining enough if you're willing to suspend disbelief.

A great adventure story

First words
I made good time on the way to the West Country; the road was clear and there was only an occasional car coming in the other direction to blind me with headlights.
Last words
(Click to show. Warning: May contain spoilers.)That was many days afterwards. But I vaguely remember that the sun was just coming up as the chopper took off and I was clutching that little gold lady which Vivero had made. Christ was not to be seen, but I remember the dark shape of the Temple at Yum Chac looming above the water and drifting away forever beneath the heavily beating rotors.
