This is a nice example of “be careful what you wish for because it might come true.” It’s a cautionary tale a father tells his young daughter. First published in 1908, this story was featured in Richard Paul Evans’ “The Christmas Box” and has been published again with a forward by him. It’s an interesting tale, but somehow it lacks that warm fuzzy feeling of modern Christmas stories. (

Five short delightful stories for children, told in the voice of "the papa" to "the girl" and "the boy" William Dean Howells (March 1, 1837 – May 11, 1920) was an American realist author and literary critic. Nicknamed "The Dean of American Letters", he was particularly known for his tenure as editor of the Atlantic Monthly as well as his own prolific writings, including the Christmas story "Christmas Every Day" and the novel The Rise of Silas Lapham.
