This "Popular Exposition of the Gospel According to Matthew" was the last work written by C.H. Spurgeon and was published posthumously the year after his death. "During two previous winters in the South of France, a great part of dear Mr. Spurgeon's leisure had been devoted to the production of this Commentary," wrote Mrs. C.H. Spurgeon in her introductory note to the volume, "and it bears much internal evidence of the brightness of the sunny shore where it was written." She went on to add show more that "till within a few days of the termination of his lovely and gracious life, he was incessantly occupied in expounding this portion of God's Word." The emphasis of this exposition, as may be seen from its title, is the Kingdom of God, and most importantly, the King Himself, the Lord Jesus Christ. "Our Saviour King has come to save real sinners," Spurgeon declares, "He deals not with our merits, but with our demerits. There would be no need to save us if we were not lost." To this reprint of the original Passmore and Alabaster edition of 1893 the publishers have added a treasure trove of previously unpublished letters and book reviews of C.H. This is a newly typeset edition of the only commentary on a complete New Testament book ever written by C.H. Spurgeon (1834-92). Originally published as The Gospel of the Kingdom, it was largely written during the last days of the great preacher's life. 'Such words acquire a solemnity and pathos with which nothing else could invest them', wrote Mrs. Susannah Spurgeon when first introducing the volume in 1893 shortly after the death of her husband. Spurgeon's Commentary on Matthew therefore represents the fruit of a lifetime spent in the study and exposition of Scripture. Charles Haddon Spurgeon was born in Kelvedon, Essex, England on June 19, 1834. His father and his grandfather were both pastors and at the age of twenty, he became the pastor of the New Park Street Church in London. The congregation quickly grew out of the building and moved to Exeter Hall. In 1861, the congregation moved to the newly constructed show more Metropolitan Tabernacle. During his lifetime, he published over thirty-five hundred sermons that filled 63 volumes. His series stands as the largest set of books by a single author in the history of Christianity. He also wrote Ploughman's Talk and The Treasury of David. During his last years, he suffered severe physical pain from a gout attack. He was growing increasing ill and died on January 31, 1892.
