Fiction. Mystery. Mythology. Members of an Egyptian expedition fall victim to an ancient mummy's curse in a thrilling Veronica Speedwell novel from the New York Times bestselling author of the Lady Julia Grey mysteries. London, 1888. As colorful and unfettered as the butterflies she collects, Victorian adventuress Veronica Speedwell can't resist the allure of an exotic mystery-particularly one involving her enigmatic colleague, Stoker. His former expedition partner has vanished from an archaeological dig with a priceless diadem unearthed from the newly discovered tomb of an Egyptian princess. This disappearance is just the latest in a string of unfortunate events that have plagued the controversial expedition, and rumors abound that the curse of the vengeful princess has been unleashed as the shadowy figure of Anubis himself stalks the streets of London. But the perils of an ancient curse are not the only challenges Veronica must face as sordid details and malevolent enemies emerge from Stoker's past. Caught in a tangle of conspiracies and threats-and thrust into the public eye by an enterprising new foe-Veronica must separate facts from fantasy to unravel a web of duplicity that threatens to cost Stoker everything. . . .… (more)

A Treacherous Curse
4 Stars

The intrepid Miss Veronica Speedwell and her enigmatic partner investigate the disappearance of Stoker's former friend and colleague, John de Morgan, who has disappeared from an Egyptian archeological dig together with a priceless artifact.

Similar to the previous books, the mystery is neither original nor complex. Nevertheless, as a fan of all things Egyptian, the inclusion of elements such a "mummy's curse" and "visitations by Anubis" contribute to the overall atmosphere of the narrative.

The true strength of the story lies in the insights into Stoker's past and his developing relationship with Veronica. The events surrounding Stoker's physical scars and the destruction of his reputation are finally revealed, and Veronica's reactions only serve to strengthen their bond.

Stoker and Veronica's snarky banter and subtle chemistry are wonderful. Their open acceptance of each other's fortitude and flaws makes them a particularly engaging pair. Now if only they would realize they are perfect for one another.

In sum, this series is rapidly becoming a favorite and I am eager to see what is in store for this daring duo next.

Veronica Speedwell is beginning to settle into her life dealing with collecting butterflies and admiring Stoker. When his ex-wife and the ex-friend that left him for dead in a jungle end up in trouble and with the ex-friend missing, assumed to have stolen a priceless diadem from a tomb and absconded with it. His ex-wife had married his ex-friend and she claimed that he had travelled with her but the hotel owner claims otherwise. Anubis has been seen around London and the dig leader is trying to get an exhibition together to reimburse himself for all he has spent on the digs before. Speedwell and Stoker are tasked with looking into things, even with the complicated history and things get more complicated before they are resolved.
Very satisfying and interesting, the characters are starting to really get into their stride and it was fun to read. ( )
