Description

Templates are among the most powerful features of C++, but they are too often neglected, misunderstood, and misused. C++ Templates: The Complete Guide provides software architects and engineers with a clear understanding of why, when, and how to use templates to build and maintain cleaner, faster, and smarter software more efficiently. C++ Templates begins with an insightful tutorial on basic concepts and language features. The remainder of the book serves as a comprehensive reference, show more focusing first on language details, then on a wide range of coding techniques, and finally on advanced applications for templates. Examples used throughout the book illustrate abstract concepts and demonstrate best practices. Readers learn The exact behaviors of templates How to avoid the pitfalls associated with templates Idioms and techniques, from the basic to the previously undocumented How to reuse source code without threatening performance or safety How to increase the efficiency of C++ programs How to produce more flexible and maintainable software This practical guide shows programmers how to exploit the full power of the template features in C++. The companion Web site at http://www.josuttis.com/tmplbook/ contains sample code and additional updates. 0201734842B09172002 show less

If you delight in finding typographical and other errors in text and code, you'll love this book. If, on the other hand, you, like me, expect a difficult professional text to be thoroughly copy-edited by one or more competent professionals, then you will be increasingly infuriated as you wade through this book.

At times, it felt like every page contained at least one substantial error: a sentence that simply makes no sense, or has the wrong word, or in one place, is the duplicate of a long sentence in the preceding paragraph.

Arguably worse are the code samples that simply could never have been tested, or which would work fine but whose included comments are simply wrong.

It's not obvious that there are any competitors for this book in show more regard to the depth of the coverage of the subject matter, so if you really want to understand modern C++ templates you probably have no choice (at the moment) but will have to grit your teeth and go through this book. But don't expect to enjoy the experience if you care about the English language or are going to rely on the code samples.

[Just to be fair, the error rate in the code samples isn't high -- unlike the error rate in the text -- but it's not zero (as it should be) either.]
