Interesting story -- plainly a set up for a continuing series. This is a new genre for me --I'm trying to broaden my fiction experience -- so maybe some of my criticisms are due to unfamiliarity with expectations here. My first critique is that sometimes the language seems to be too willfully eccentric. Phrases that seem to have the 'wrong' word. I like surprising wordplay, generally, but there was just a little too much of it. Again, maybe it's my expectation at fault. Another problem, for me, was the way new main characters, groups, monsters, etc. are introduced every few chapters, right up until near the end. This is why I see it as setting the stage for a series, the whole thing seems expository. But it was a good story; I'll be interested to see how it continues. ( )
