“Moses Sees a Play” is an amazing book! This is a story about a boy named Moses who goes to a deaf school. At his school, the Little Theatre of the Deaf are performing Cinderella. Joining Moses and his classmates to watch the play is another class of students who are not deaf. Moses then befriends a boy from the other class, Manuel, who has just moved to the United States and does not speak English. Although Manuel is not deaf, him and Moses both struggle with communicating with others. Moses then teaches Manuel how to communicate using body gestures. In the end, the students of both classes want to put on their own plays. My favorite part of this story were the illustrations on each page that teach the readers sign language. I was show more excited to try doing the signs and I learned some words in American Sign Language. This is a GREAT book to read with students. It not only shows how the deaf communicates, but it also shows the struggle those who move to America have communicating with others. The story tells the readers those who are deaf are just like anyone else. I would love to read this book to my class and have everyone learn sign language all together. This book is very unique, and I loved everything about it! show less
I liked this book for many reasons. First, the story is very relatable to many children and many classrooms. Especially when it comes to new students whom first language is not English. Secondly, I liked how the teachers are involved in finding the new student named Manuel a buddy whom he can speak to or who can help him throughout the school day. It is very important for teachers to be involved more with their students, especially those whom English is not their first language. I guess that is part of getting to know your students and creating that student and teacher relationship, because some teachers just get caught up in their lesson and in assessments than in their student’s abilities. The language in the book is clear and very show more interesting because the story is written in English, but there are also pictures of sign language that go with the story/plot. The story is about Moses meeting Manuel who is a new student and doesn’t know American Sign Language, only Spanish sign language. Moses helps Manuel get used to his new school and helps him understand a play and the teacher. Mr. Samuel the teacher tells Moses, “Moses, you can communicate with Manuel using gestures.” Finally, I think it’s interesting how you can communicate many ways with someone when they don’t know your language, so there is never an excuse of not being able to understand someone because you can use your hands, body, or any other way to communicate with someone else. We communicate every day, even when we are not using our body or mouths. show less
In my opinion this is a wonderful book. The main message of this book is that even though people might speak a different language we can still have some way of communication and be friends. Everyone should be accepted. First, I loved how the book taught the reader sign language throughout the pages. For example at the top of each page would be a box with Moses signing an important phrase from that page. It would tell the reader step by step how to do that sign. I also liked the story because of the illustrations. They were very bright and clear. It is important that they were clear so that the reader could really see how Moses communicated with his friend and the different signs he would use. Lastly, I loved the story because of the show more powerful message. It really pushed the readers to think about how someone might feel if they don't speak the same language as the majority. I haven't found many books on children who speak sign language so I found it very unique. show less
There are many reasons why I enjoyed this book! This book takes place in a school for the deaf, so throughout the story there are illustrations of how to sign, using American Sign Language, certain words that are found on the page. Also, this book features an ESL student so there are references to common Spanish words, like "amigo" when he and one of the deaf students become friends. These characters can relate to many different types of students. The illustrations enhanced the story by showing how students who are deaf or learning a second language are no different from everyone else, they like to learn and have fun with friends and even watch plays, which is what happened in this story. This book pushes readers to put themselves in show more someone else's shoes and think about tough ideas. The big idea of this story is that we are all similar in many ways, but we are also very different and we should appreciate those differences. show less
Moses Sees A Play is a great book for readers of all abilities, but it gives English Language Learners and deaf / hard of hearing children time to tell their story or at least see people like them in a book. The bridges that are built between ASL and ELL are wonderful. It is a great introduction to ASL. The artwork is friendly and inviting, just like anyone who communicated in a different way would want to be treated.
I thought that this book was incredible. It is about a young boy who attends a school for the deaf and they go to see a play. What I really love about this book is that it includes the signs for some of the words directly on the page that the reader is reading. This allows the reader to sign the words along with Moses and the other characters in the book. I really liked this because I was able to learn more word in sign language. I have always wanted to learn ASL and this helped a bit.
The message in this book is much like the other books on disability; children who are deaf are just like other children, they just can't hear. This book also has a separate story as well. Moses, the main character, meets another student from a different show more school. This students does not speak English, so this book also explored how Moses and the other student communicate when neither of them know the same language. But these students find ways to communicate with each other to share their stories and lives.
Overall, I really liked this book because it does not just focus on the main story, it has a separate story where two boys who can not communicate the same way share their lives. This is such a great book to show people that individuals who are deaf are the same as other individuals. show less

I really like this book, because it shows the communication between children. There is a boy, who does not speak either English or the sign language, only Spanish, but he and Moses manage to communicate with each other. Isn't that something we adults still have to learn?
Moreover, the book shows how important it is that children who are deaf should also be able to go to the theater and get the opportunity to see plays. Maybe, the book can encourage people to learn sign language and maybe help people with impairment to include them better in society.
