In this sweet snapshot of a father and son sneaking out of the house early in the morning to show the son his first sunrise, we get to see how a boy who is deaf communicates with his father. They use sign language, lip reading and even have a secret hand squeeze, highlighting for readers that language, communications and signals are capable in many modalities. The author even makes sure that the reader speaks aloud, to show the complete spectrum of ability. Adaptive equipment and strategies are mentioned, but they are just details in one boy's life. By keeping the focus on the special relationship and time shared between a father and son, the author cleverly paints a picture of a typical little boy who just happens to be deaf.
This is a touching story about a young boy's first time seeing a sunrise with his father. Every part of the story is injected with subtleties which shed light on how the young child operated with out the ability to hear, such as the using the squeezing of the hand as a way for the father and son to communicate. While the story's focus is on the sharing of a special moment between loved ones, the underlying aspect of being deaf adds to the tale a very unique perspective on the world.
Jacob, a young boy with a hearing disability, dreams of seeing the sunrise. The story begins with him waking up to his special alarm clock, putting on his hearing aids, and waking his dad. Although he cannot hear, he can communicate in many ways such as: signing, lip reading, and even squeezing his dads hand. As Jacob and his dad walk to the perfect spot on the beach to make his dream come true, Jacob is able to smell the pine trees, see a bunny, and splash in the water. When the time finally comes, Jacob is in awe. He never imagined something so beautiful. Jacob is perfectly able to see and hear the sunrise just as anyone else, which I find to be pretty amazing.
I truly loved this book. It is written so elegantly and simply but holds so much meaning and purpose. The book is written from the perspective of a little boy that is deaf but still has many ways of communicating with his father, who he has a strong relationship with. The author includes descriptive detail about how the father and son communicate. For example, it explains that when they squeeze one another's hand, they are showing the love between them. The overall story is about the father and son waking up early to watch the sunrise. However, the message about communicating with a deaf human is very strong and incredibly important for children to know.
A young boy who is hearing impaired tells the story of him waking up with his daddy and going to see the sun rise. Along the way they communicate via sign language and lip reading. A cute story to read to young students, especially if there is someone who is deaf in the classroom.
Our unnamed protagonist spends the morning watching the sunrise along the beach with his father. What readers do know is that our main character is deaf/ hard-of-hearing. The protagonist communicates with his dad by lip-reading, signing, and speaking. I liked that all three were incorporated since not all d/Deaf people sign, and not all d/Deaf people read lips.
Dad and Me in the Morning is about a little boy's trip to watch the sun rise at the beach with his dad. The little boy is hearing impaired, wears a hearing aid and signs his speech. His dad is very patient with him, and they even have a secret hand squeeze amongst them to communicate special moments. Having a child who is hearing impaired is not easy on a family who hears. The boy in the story really cherishes the time his father takes to bond with him over a sunrise. I think it was a very important image to see the dynamic of the father and son so peaceful and understanding. The little boy has a disability but the way he operates his morning and seemingly daily life, it does not hinder his adventure, his love or his zest for life. The show more dad plays a pivotal part in his son's confidence. show less
