Essentially the book equivalent of a low budget community theater play. The plot races wildly then jumps randomly like it has ADHD. The characters are so one-dimensional it felt like one person was just putting on wigs and doing different accents.

As long as you're okay with shutting off your brain and just accepting what appears to be a hasty summary of a comic book, this isn't the worst scifi out there. The lengthy flashback sequence is actually very well written.
A comet is reported by scientists approaching the earth -- then an ordinary American young man goes to sleep and wakes up transformed into metal. he and few others are living metal people, but most of the population has become lifeless metal statues. It turns out this is the result of invasion from Rigel by a wise superior alien race --but however wise they are, the hero and his fellow humans resist the invasion. Pratt wroie history and fantasy books I greatly enjoy (Battles that Changed HIstory and The Well of the Unicorn for example). This is not as good as his bets in my eyes, but competent I inherted it from my father, who also liked Pratt.
I found it for two dollars and the cover was too good to pass up. I tried reading it and it was terrible... but who cares?
