HIDING THE WITNESS  Caught accidentally eavesdropping on plans for a major cargo theft, Lily Doyle's chased by men who want her dead. And she narrowly escapes when Deputy Sheriff Nate Bedford--her former high school classmate--comes to her rescue. The criminals won't stop until they finish their mission, though, so going into hiding with the handsome lawman is her only shot at survival. With a troubled past hanging over his head, Nate has something to prove--to himself and the community. And saving Lily's life could be a step in the right direction. But with a deadly crime ring aiming to silence her for good, will hiding Lily at his friend's secluded ranch be enough to keep them away?… (more)

3.5 stars (some sites do not allow half stars in rating, so rating may vary). When I see the title of this book, I keep thinking of a line from a song that says "dark desert highway"--so much so that I searched for this book under high desert highway before realizing the last word of the title wasn't highway but hideaway!

For the first 3/4 of the book, I thought it was so-so. Lily overhears something while working late one night, and even though what she overheard wasn't enough to know anything, the people she overheard come after her. By chance, a childhood-classmate-who's-now-a-deputy-sheriff comes into the gas station mart and ends up rescuing her. And, in the tried-and-true genre theme, they both have reasons why they couldn't be in love with each other and even keep trying to convince themselves of that.

The last 1/4 of the book was more interesting--and just when you think the suspense has ended, there's a twist!

I also kind of got a hint that Crystal Rios and Gaston may have a book in the future--and wondered if Olivia and Elijah had a story before this--I'm guessing possibly since I see this author has another title called "Last Stand Ranch" and that fits in with the little I know about Olivia and Elijah from this book.
