Description

“She invades the turf of John le Carré. . . . It is very good.”—Los Angeles Times Book Review

Barrie Mayer, a beautiful Washington literary agent, arrives at London’s Heathrow Airport with plenty of time to make her flight to Budapest, where she’s planning to meet an author. The airport is crowded, but it’s not a scheduling problem that keeps Barrie from getting off the ground.

The doctors call her death a heart attack, but her best friend, Collette Cahill, has her doubts. A show more CIA agent herself, Collette knows that Barrie was carrying more than just contracts to Hungary. Then Collette gets the order from above: Find out what happened to Barrie. And, more important, what happened to her briefcase.

So Collette sets off on a search that will take her from London to Washington to the Caribbean, from restaurants to psychiatrists’ offices to bedrooms. After all—even CIA agents lose their hearts every now and then. But Collette may lose her life. . . .

“Her most far-ranging and, arguably, her best.”—New Woman .

I really enjoyed this one - great twisty plot and a strong female lead character. An almost 5 star.
Collette Cahil works for the CIA in Hungary. Her good friend, Barrie, is a courier, who is murdered. Collette is asked to look into it and discovers the dark side of the CIA. Not the best but I liked it.
Well, so much for "fake news" and the silliness of conspiracy theories! My cousin, who used to be NSA, had already hinted at the CIA's attitudes and practices as depicted here, and all those click-bait YouTube videos proclaim them outright, but here's a realistic account by someone in the know.
Collette Cahill works for the CIA in Budapest, Hungary. Her good friend, Barrie Mayer, is murdered and Cahill looks into it and finds the negative side of CIA. Her suspects are all members of the CIA so it's tough to know who is lying. I like Truman's books.
A tremendously good book in it's authenticity. It exhibits the insides of a secret organization such as the CIA.
given tha t the author probably knows more about the cia than any other person i was dusappointed about how flat this book was.
Reading these with my Mom.
A favorite series.
Great mysteries and great insight into behind the scenes Washington DC.
I'm reading them ALL.
Read in 2005.
