El doctor Luis Suárez Fernández ha sabido revivir con maestría las emociones de peligro dinástico y nacional del reinado de don Juan I. El rey castellano recibió un reino hipotecado por problemas derivados del anterior reinado: Portugal e Inglaterra siguieron siendo contrarios al titular de Castilla y León. Juan de Gante, casado con Constanza, hija de Pedro I, reclamaba el trono. Pero su compleja política exterior va más allá, pues en el otro frente Juan I quiso ocupar Lisboa y hubo de aceptar la derrota de Aijubarrota. Su política interior, sin embargo, se caracterizó por una intensa tarea legislativa.
