Now here is a motivational book! If you are a person who wants to be stronger and tougher, both physically and mentally. If you are someone who expects more from yourself, see themselves as a leader, or just wants to be better, then this is a book that you really need to pick up. Former Navy Seal/author/podcaster/motivation speaker Jocko Willink guides the reader through the basic training of how to become more disciplined in our lives.
The book is broken up into two parts: the philosophical and the physical. Part one, the philosophical, is titled 'Thoughts' and that is exactly what is sounds like,: Jocko's personal thoughts and musings on the different aspects one can utilize to become more disciplined.
Part two is titled 'Action'. This show more focuses on the physical side of becoming more disciplined: what one can do, where one can do it, how one can do it, what happens when one does it, and more (including workouts for the beginner, intermediate and advanced gym rat).
One thing that really stood out was how it is repeated in here to open-minded, so one can learn and grow. Repeating that this is not the end-all-be-all in the workout/diet/martial art world. There are more options out there than just what he covers. That we should find what we are comfortable with and then get after it everyday. Another thing is that through his writing one believe that we can do the things he is instructing us to do and be.
The negative, not for me, but I can see how it would turn people off would be that this is a very demanding book. He feels along with just about anyone who has lived a disciplined lifestyle, there is one route to the finish line and that is being uncompromising with yourself. No wiggle-room. The information in here is also not new or novel. But that is just it as well, there is nothing novel about working hard every day. This might not be everyone's cup of tea, but I believe he is 100% correct as harsh as it is/can be.
"Discipline Equals Freedom" is is more than the title, its the thought that the more disciplined we are, the more in control of ourselves we are, the less outside influence has over us, that control in turn will grow in us exponentially which will break the bonds that have us in chains in our lives, freeing us to live our best life.
This is an easy to read, somewhat on the shorter side motivational title that I would recommend to anyone and everyone. Jocko nailed it. 4.5 stars.

I read this book a chapter a day each morning.
Overall, I found the advice reasonable, but it did not blow my mind, or maybe just isn't what I was looking for.
It includes a section on thoughts, nutrition, and working out.
WARNING: This is a coffee table book. But, it is a coffee table book that won't just sit on the table, gathering dust. You'll pick it up again to clarify your thinking and motivate you to action. Don't read this if you are looking for a long treatise. Read this book for motivation. This is not a long, involved read. It is a short book, but its value is not in the first read. This is a book that you will very likely come back to again and again for motivation.
Common Sense Discipline Advice

Good book on practical, common sense discipline. While the author takes everything to an extreme, “maybe something to do with being a navy seal” most of the knowledge can be applied in a more reasonable way.

The workouts at the end are also very useful just as a guide to have something.

I will read this again. Offers some inspiring motivation.
Received an ARC of this book from a Goodreads Giveaway. Very glad I did. This book was excellent. This is an easy read about how to bring more discipline in you life. Short and to the point. No namby pamby feel good advice here. Basically it tells you to just nut up and do what you need to do. Push through and you will succeed. Gives advice on nutrition, exercise, attitude etc.
Not a lot of novelty, I'm afraid.
