A long time has passed since the end of the previous book in the ‘Wild Lands’ series, set in what has now become Colorado, and this third story takes place in the 1930s. The pact between the wolfshifters in the forest and the humans on the Wild Lands Ranch that was forged a hundred years ago between Elijah, the first human to settle the land, and Armand, his wolf partner, is still valid. But the level of contact between wolves and humans is almost nonexistent in the current generation. All that changes when the prolonged drought and dust storms force Timothy and his widowed mother to hire hands who are less than honest. Timothy has had enough of their abuse, but he is too young to chase the men off the land his family owns. Asking show more the wolves for help may be the only way out, but he isn’t sure they even exist.

Timothy, his mother, and Timothy’s two young half brothers are facing tough times on the Wild Lands Ranch. Timothy wants to help, but he is not strong enough to face the group of abusive hands his mother has had to hire to work the cattle. When two of them come after him as well, during a trip to town to sell some cattle, there is nothing he can do. Luckily he gets unexpected help – from a wolf who kills Timothy’s abusers, then turns into a man and offers his help. Timothy is shocked at first, but the guy did help, and Timothy quickly learns to trust him.

Derek has been watching the human ranch for years, taking turns with other members of his pack. He is curious about the humans, Timothy in particular, so when he finds out what the ranch hands are planning, he races after them and saves Timothy. But now what? Derek decides it is more important to protect “his human” than keeping his identity a secret, and this sets in motion more changes than he could have imagined.

If you want to know how the Wild Lands Ranch is doing, if a curious wolfshifter and a human who needs his help sound interesting, and if you’re looking for a read that is suspenseful, full of cross-cultural discoveries, the desperate search for water, and a slowly developing romance that turns out to be quite hot, then you will probably like this novella.
