Quite a few of these stories are rather unsatisfactory, including the story this book got its title from, 'The Doctor's Sweetheart', a story I actually rather disliked. Other compilations - Road to Yesterday and Chronicles of Avonlea - are more satisfying reads than this. Not all of the stories reflect Ms. Montgomery's best or even usual work, but there ARE a few gems in here, especially 'The Garden of Spices'. For these few wonderful stories, this collection is worth the read, and is a must for any LM Montgomery fan.
I was surprised by how much I enjoyed this. I loved "Anne of Green Gables" as a child, but I'm not much for short stories. These were quick and engaging and I love the way that she wrote.
It’s always so exciting to come home from a day of wondering through used bookstores with another LMM book that you didn’t have previously. Let’s face it, unless you want to order them on-line, it is SO HARD to find one of her non-Anne or non-Emily books around here, even in the used book stores.

The Doctor’s Sweetheart is another collection of her short stories. The stories in the book are arranged in chronological order, and I have to say that I enjoyed the ones that were written later as opposed to the earlier ones.

Montgomery would sometimes rework her short stories to put them into their novels, so when I read the story “I Know a Secret,” I couldn’t help but giggle and picture little Blythe children frolicking about in show more my mind. Needless to say, that has become one of my favourite stories from this collection. I also really loved “The Garden of Spices” and “The Doctor’s Sweetheart.” show less

The Doctor's Sweetheart is a collection of short stories previously published in various magazines. Most of them are love stories, but there are some other subjects covered here too. My favorites are probably "Lady Jane" in which a man becomes dinner partners with the girl who broke his heart and has to pretend to be his cousin, and "The Bride is Waiting" in which a woman helps a friend furnish his new house for his bride-to-be. Some have borne the passage of time better than others though. "By the Grace of Julius Caesar", in which a man's dog trees the two women whom he's asked to marry and the man refuses to call off the dog until one of them agrees to marry him, is only funny if you don't think too much into it.

If you enjoy show more Montgomery's writing, you'll probably want to at least glance through this one. show less
L.M. Montgomery is a long time and all time favorite author of mine. She writes the perfect girls story with just the right mix of adventure, drama and happiness. I find her books a comfort to read and have re-read most of her works many times over the years. They are classics for a reason and that reason is they are great. These are true comfort books for me and books I enjoy re-reading again and again.
Short stories by the author of 'Anne of Green Gables'. Mostly featuring romances of some sort, so they're timeless and barely seem a century old. Pleasant and enjoyable.
Miss Montgomery does not excel at the short story format.
