In this book -- the first in his lexical trilogy -- Buechner puts the language of God, the universe, and the human spirit under his wry linguistic microscope. In his often ironic and always keen-sighted reflection on such terms as agnostic, envy, love, and sin, he invites us to look at these everyday words in new and enlightening ways. Revised and expanded edition
Definitions and explanations of the ABC's of religion and spirituality.
Good and clever writing makes this more than a dry theological guide.
"Doubts are the ants in the pants of faith. They keep it awake and moving."
"If you want to know who you really are, as distinct from who you like to think you really are, keep an eye on where your feet take you."
"In our minds, we are continually chattering with ourselves, and the purpose of meditation is to stop it."
"We learn to praise God not by paying compliments, but by paying attention. Watch how the trees exult when the wind is in them. Mark the utter stillness of the great blue heron in the swamp. Listen to the sound of the rain. Learn how to say Hallelujah! from the ones who say it right."
This book is sort of hard to read in terms of format, but if you are able to get over that then you will find some gems in this beautiful collection. Buechner has a way with words and understanding that go together so well and allow for thought processes to be expanded rather than limited. I look forward to reading more of his in the future and am quite grateful for him.
Definitions of religious terms in the context of real life. From the church library-- insightful, yet funny and telling at the same time.
Some surprising definitions to words that creep up in Christianity all the time. This is the book that sold me on Frederick Buechner as my favourite author.
Funny, witty and enlightening book, very enjoyable to read and ponder...he has very good answers to very difficult questions, universal truths, will never grow old
Bok that had a major role in restoring my faith at one point, though I do not agree with the aythor on everything

Quotations
To forgive somebody is to say one way or another, “You have done something unspeakable, and by all rights I should call it quits between us. Both my pride and my principles (q.v.) demand no less. However, although I make no... (show all) guarantees that I will be able to forget what you've done, and though we may both carry the scars for life, I refuse to let it stand between us. I still want you for my friend.
