Description

When a breach birth leaves Paulo severely disabled, his father, the articulate, unsentimental Professor Frigerio, struggles to come to terms with his son's condition. Face to face with his own limitations, Frigerio confronts the strange way society around him handles Paolo's handicaps and observes his surprising gifts. In spare, deeply affecting episodes, the professor of language explores the nuanced boundaries between "normal" and "disabled" worlds.A remarkable memoir of fathering, winner show more of the 2001 Strega Prize, Italy's most prestigious literary honor, Born Twice is noted Italian author Guiseppe Pontiggia's American debut. Sometimes meditative, often humorous, and always probing, Pontiggia's haunting characters linger and resound long after the book is done. show less

[I'd never heard of this book, then suddenly I was seeing it everywhere. It's amazing how that happens sometimes. I believe this book appeared on the New York Times list of books that critics loved but expected didn't have wide readership in the US. This book should definitely find more readers. There were occasional moments of cultural or translation awkwardness that made me stumble -- such as repeated references in conversation to someone changing to dialect, or the use of the tu form of address -- but overall the book was heartfelt and readable. As a lawyer, I couldn't help noticing the lack of litigious instinct on the part of the parents. Their son, through inept use of forceps during a breech birth, has physical and linguistic show more disabilities. The book, more a series of memories than a chronological plot-based story, is told from the father's perspective as he examines his own reactions to his son's disabilities and the developing reactions between them. show less
Translated from Italian, this award winning book of fiction is about a father with a diabled son. The father writes about significant events and his thoughts about his son and their relationship. Not sad, but more thought provoking.
This great [Italian] novel of fatherhood has been woefully underread in the U.S., perhaps because Pontiggia died soon after its publication here.
