"These long-awaited diaries of Sir Alan 'Tommy' Lascelles, now published by permission of Her Majesty the Queen, throw new light on the way in which King George VI and his Prime Minister, Winston Churchill, worked together during the Second World War." "Among numerous other revelations, the author describes how he personally stopped monarch and politician sailing on board the lead cruiser during operation 'Overlord', the D-Day attack on the French coast in June 1944. He also tells, for the first time, the full story of his own sudden elevation to the post of the King's principal Private Secretary, in place of Sir Alec Hardinge, in July 1943. Yet it is the war, seen from the commanding heights of Buckingham Palace and No. 10 Downing Street, that dominates these journals. King's Counsellor gives an unique picture of the royal family in action at a critical period in the life of the nation."--BOOK JACKET.… (more)

This is an excellent edition of Lascelles' later diaries, a fundamental source for the period from 1936 to late 1940s involving the Royal Family. Very interesting portraits of many important people, and events, from a unique perspective. Lascelles was a well-rounded humane man who never let himself be overwhelmed by his position as Principal Secretary to King George VI. One warning - despite the sub-title, it does not contemporaneously cover the period of the abdication of Edward VIII, although it does have later material on it. ( )

I am really enjoying this memoir of diary entries from Tommy Laschelles, private secretary to George VI during the second war. If you have a heart for this era, this is a grand book! Rather difficult to get a hold of as it is out of print presently. I found a copy in bookshop in Toronto. ( )
