Elliott Thompson was once a historian with a promising academic future, but his involvement in a scandal meant a lost job, public shame, and a ruined love life. He took shelter in his rural California hometown, where he teaches online classes, hoards books, and despairs of his future.Simon Odisho has lost a job as well--to a bullet that sidelined his career in law enforcement. While his shattered knee recovers, he rethinks his job prospects and searches for the courage to come out to his close-knit but conservative extended family. In an attempt to manage his overflowing book collection, Elliott builds a miniature neighborhood library in his front yard. The project puts him in touch with his neighbors--for better and worse--and introduces him to handsome, charming Simon. While romance blooms quickly between them, Elliott's not willing to live in the closet, and his best career prospects might take him far away. I read several books at a time, mostly romances but different kinds, because (for instance) I want calmer stories for reading before sleep. There are troubles, but they aren't big scary things.

Two people who are at crossroads in lives and careers find each other, and the rep is really nicely handled. (Ex-cop likes to eat & it shows, ex-tenure-track academic has escaped a scandal but is having trouble filling his life with meaning (not really getting that his ex was a narcissistic controlling asshat. The reader knows, but Elliot? Only kinda.)

Anyway, I had to read the last few chapters without a break. I'm glad I did or there'd be tears in my pillow. Here's the thing; you can see what will happen, but the way Fielding does it is surprising and really beautiful. That's why this gets five stars. I am a fan of Really Beautiful. ( )

The first half of the book seemed like this was going to be a fun, quick romantic read, even if a bit on the sappy side, but it just went on for far too long. About 100 pages or so could be cut from this book and you'd get a better, more satisfying romance. There was just a lot of filler like pages-long descriptions of them going about their normal day to day activities or little explainers that were unnecessary for anyone alive today. The dog thing was a red flag for me and also didn't add anything to the story in the long run (I mean, they'd been on maybe 3 dates at this point? and Simon pushes a dog on him? No, sir).
I had to really push myself to finish this at about 75% done and it became a burden. I didn't want my first book of the year to be a DNF. ( )

This story is just what I needed to get out of a book slump. It was not perfect, but it was warm and fun.
I had a few niggles - especially that bit in the epilogue with a surprise baby - I feel that has been done too much in MM as it is, and it was completely unnecessary here, but mostly I just enjoyed it.

Andrew McFerrin is a new to me narrator and he has a warm voice that's really easy to listen to. ( )
