Fantasy. Young Adult Fiction. Young Adult Literature. HTML:Olivia Foster hasn't felt alive since her little brother drowned in the backyard pool three years ago. Then Kara Hallas moves in across the street with her mother and grandmother, and Olivia is immediately drawn to these three generations of women. Kara is particularly intoxicating, so much so that Olivia not only comes to accept Kara's morbid habit of writing to men on death row, she helps her do it. They sign their letters as the Resurrection Girls.
But as Kara's friendship pulls Olivia out of the dark fog she's been living in, Olivia realizes that a different kind of darkness taints the otherwise lively Hallas women—an impulse that is strange, magical, and possibly deadly.

"Resurrection Girls" is a heartbreaking tale about a family grieving the loss of their son and brother, and what led them to spiral out of control. The author was able to write the realism of death and what transpires after the fact, and that left me wanting more. To be honest I think I would've enjoyed the novel more if it was primarily focused on Olivia and and Kara (as a minor character obviously because she did irk me more times than I could count) story, and Prescott out of the equation. Otherwise a worthwhile read.

Beautiful dark visceral story. I usually avoid books that could be described as sad or tragic with a 10 foot pole, but this beautiful book was perfection. ( )

After the accidental and extremely tragic death of her three-year-old brother, Olivia's life has basically stopped. Her father spends long hours away from the house and his family, her mother spends every day in an opioid coma, and Olivia is resigned to watching life happen to other people instead of participating, until an enigmatic family of women move in across the street. Kara, the daughter of the new neighbors, is a morbid and impulsive spitfire and Olivia is drawn to her; they both have intimate relationships with death. Peppered with tiny bits of death lore from Greek mythology, it's a look at how grief deeply affects everything in life, how to be a good friend, how to move past immeasurable loss. Though the paranormal/supernatural elements of this story feel underdeveloped, it succeeds in the development of its main character, who slowly becomes less passive and more direct in what she wants and needs; she becomes, in a way, resurrected. Overall, a little bit moody, beautifully written with introspection and respect for those who have encountered death in their lives first hand. ( )

An eerie, strange, morbid book about adolescent girls running from and toward death.
