The great book continues. This one inspired me to go to Versailles. ( )

The emerald-eyed slave of passion flounces on through 17th century Paris, this time de haut en bas and back up to the hautest haut again. This series is the only one (except for Georgette Heyer, whose books don't constitute a series) that I have held on to all these years. ( )

A few years back well in France I just had to visit Versailles and the main reason was having read this fast passed romance. I found this delicious book on my granny's bookshelf many years ago, boy when I read the cover, I was thinking what is she doing with this sultry book. So I snuck it back to my room to consume with much eagerness, it did not disappoint, then I found out this was the second in a series. Nothing would stop me now I had to get the rest of them. I enjoyed each and ever one. (well ok the first 6 or was it 7). These books are all well worth the read if you can find them. I still have a few floating around so that I can at any time relive my youth and dream about the Sun King and Angelique at the amazing Château de Versailles ( )

These are reasonably well written bodice-busters; epic, historical romances set in the reign of Louis XIV of France. Angelique is the daughter of an impoverished nobleman, who is goes to court after an arranged marriage to another noble.

There is a certain Perils of Pauline quality to these: just how many adventures can Angelique undergo, only becoming more beautiful. And how many people can she simultaneously be in love with?

They are also extremely rich in historical detail, and bring life at court and in France to life. ( )

This is actually book 3 in the series. In the UK the first two novels Angélique: The Marquise of the Angels and Angélique: The Road to Versailles were originally published together in an 800-plus page volume, entitled Angélique, and is thus Book 1 and Book 2 so the numbering on various published editions may be confusing.

Book description
"The sensational French best seller about the voluptuous courtesan who gambled her beauty for the favor of the most elegant libertine in all France - Louis XIV himself. Passionate, bewitching, completley feminine, she first rose to fame in Angelique. Now, at the glittering court of Louis XIV, a world of intrigue, lust and decadence, Angelique fought foppish courtiers, noble harlots, scheming ladies to become the King's favortive. But the way to the royal bed led through danger and degradation"
