Doctor Who: The Complete First Series

We were surprised how much we liked it the first time we saw it, in 2011, and I think appreciated it all the more re-watching in 2024. Christopher Eccleston makes an excellent ninth Doctor, introducing the character to a 21st century audience. Billie Piper is good, too, as his companion Rose.

Our box set has four DVDs with thirteen episodes, some of them lighter than others. We loved the meeting with Charles Dickens despite a somewhat spooky start to that episode. I also particularly liked the human interest story that goes back into Rose's past, and asks questions about what happens if something significant is changed in the past.

The sets and costumes are meticulously designed, as explained in some of the 'extras' on our DVDs, and the show more pace of this series is a little slower than the later ones; I appreciated that very much. All in all, I'm pleased that we decided to rewatch this, and would recommend it to anyone who likes this kind of TV show.

A mysterious alien travels through space and time with a human girl.

Eccleston's Doctor doesn't really compare with David Tennant's, but I love the over-arching story of this first season. They keep trying to top it by making things bigger, but it's never worked as well as the first time.

Essential television! A must-watch for novice sci-fi fans! Though 2 or three episodes are easily forgettable, Series 1 serves as the gateway drug to 50+ years of unbelievable history.

This box set has some good episodes and a few average ones the acting is very good with both Chris and Bille well Support by the rest of the cast over all this eas a breath of Fresh air.
