The saga of the Malory/Anderson family continues. Boyd Anderson meets a young lady who is taking passage on his ship from America to London. He's immediately attracted and so is she, but she has a plan to see the world before settling down into marriage. Their paths cross again when she rescues his young niece from some kidnappers, but unfortunately, he thinks she's the kidnapper! To make up for his rough treatment of her during this caper, he offers her the use of his ship for her world tour. He also decides to try to seduce her into cutting that tour short and marrying him.
Lindsey's heroes, even the Victorian ones, are getting less high-handed and her heroines are getting more independent, which is probably largely a function of the show more zeitgeist, but very welcome. However, and of course, the dude gets his way in the end and Katey's world tour is cut short in favor of marriage and family. Meh. show less

I love Johanna Lindsey's Malory Novels, and this one I enjoyed. Captive of My Desires was not my favorite of the Malory-Anderson series, but I did still enjoyed it. This book is about Drew Anderson and Gabrielle Brooks.
Gabrielle Brooks is the daughter of a pirate! When she finds her father and sailing with him for 3 years, he decides it is time for Gabby to look for a respectable husband in London, because that is what her mother would want. Gabby's father is old friends with James Malory.
James and his wife are put to the task of finding a husband for Gabby. I enjoyed the balls and the interaction between Drew and Gabby from the beginning. I got a little bored with how they both would think after spending time together about how they show more felt and would deny it.
The ending was nice but a little of a let down. I felt that the book spent most of the time trying to convince Gabby and Drew that they loved each other, but couldn't figure it out until both were in danger of being killed. I did laugh a lot and I enjoyed the interaction of all the characters. I will continue with this series. show less

Gabrielle Brooks leaves the safety of England in search of her missing father. Her ship is attacked by pirates and she finds herself captive on their Caribbean island; only later to learn that her very own father is one their leaders. What a surprise! She spends 3 years with him treasure hunting and enjoying a very exciting, sun-filled life. The pirates she meets along the way are a hoot.
There are few marriageable men around the islands so Gabrielle reluctantly ends up back in London to husband hunt. She is sponsored by an old acquaintance of her father, James Mallory. Unfortunately, Drew Anderson, a pirate hating, marriage avoiding, sea captain and exasperating rogue, spoils her chances with the ton by basically calling her pirate show more trash. Drew is unremorseful which is where the bulk of the story begins.
Gabrielle, who had originally set her sites on Drew as a potential husband, takes revenge by hijacking his ship and holding him captive. Then comes the typical swash buckling pirate action with battles and damaging storms. Gabrielle is bent on rescuing her father from the evil Pierre Lacross. Drew is bent on getting his ship back. Even the Mallory’s are in on the action, bent on rescuing Drew from so-called pirates.
The plot does get a bit silly when everything starts to converge toward the end. It’s a mess. There is plenty of witty banter between Drew and Gabrielle, but the love story was not at all convincing. I didn’t like Drew, he was just plain rude all the time. There was no reason for Gabrielle to love him, except maybe his gorgeous body and the reader will soon tire of reading about his dashing figure. Drew could have been much better behaved.
The Mallory’s, James and Georgina are the best part of the story. It’s too bad the book wasn’t devoted entirely to them. show less

This wasn’t her best, not compared to the rest of her books. There were way too many dry spots and I never felt pulled in or that magical connection. The story also lacked believability and seemed a bit phony.
The pluses are the characters - all are well defined. The plot was interesting enough, but lacked the above to pull it all together. The ending did have some surprise to it, which I was grateful.
All-in-all, it’s not a bad read, just not her best. Her best can take my breath away.

I've seen other's call this "Pride and Prejudice" meets "Pirates of the Caribbean" and that is a pretty apt description. This earns a star just for being a Malory book.
Okay, I'm cheating here, and I don't like them all equally, but I do love the Mallory's. They're all funny. I especially liked "Love Only Once" (the first book), "Gentle Rogue" (my favorite), and "The Magic of You" (where the heroine chases the hero shamelessly).

Johanna Lindsey was one of the world's most successful romance authors. She has written over 30 books, of which 54 million copies are in print and have been translated into 12 languages. Lindsey was born with the name Johanna Helen Howard on March 10, 1952. As a young wife and mother, Lindsey became a great fan of romance novels and wrote her show more first book, Captive Bride in 1977, on a whim when she was 25. To the young author's great surprise, it made The New York Times Bestsellers list. Lindsey had found a romance formula that worked. Take any setting past or present, introduce a rascally rakish male and a romantic heroine, let their hearts ignite with passion, lust, and love. Lindsey has something of a cult following, following such titles as "Heart of Thunder", "Hearts Aflame", "A Heart So Wild", and ''Keeper of the Heart". She has loyal fans reading "Glorious Angel" and "Gentle Rogue" and legions of devotees buying her Malory family series. In 2014 her title, Stormy Persuasion, made The New York Times Best Seller List Johanna Lindsey passed away on October 27, 2019 at the age of 67. (Bowker Author Biography) show less
