The author is the Great-Great Granson of John Phillips the person profiled in the book. The book is written like a novel with the topics taken from a book John Phillips wrote in 1912. The author expanded on the original book and filled in many of the gaps about John Phillips, a Union man who joined the 1st Alabama Cavalry U.S. The author professes that all facts are documented by two other sources. The book fills in many of the gaps on the battles that the 1st Alabama Cavalry fought in both in Alabama and on Sherman's march to the sea.
