Breathless [1960 film]

A car thief shoots a cop, then hangs out with a girl for a few days.

I simply will never understand the French New Wave. The more I see of it, the more bored it makes me. This movie has a great sort of stylistic energy that made me really want to like it. But no. So boring.

2021 movie #224. 1960. Jean-Luc Godard's highly influential movie starring Belmondo (the film made him a star) as a petty crook in Paris who kills a policeman and tries to get his American girlfriend (Seberg) to run to Rome with him. Godard pioneered the use of jump-cuts here.

The thin, conventional storyline is swept along by the imaginative, urgent style with its then innovative jump cuts, overlapping dialogue and incidentally handheld camerawork. A landmark film, it forever changed perceptions of cinema.
