Mark Thompson's publisher's note at the start of the book calls Supreme: The Return "a fresh prospective on the genre" of the "caped archetype."

I don't see it.

Maybe it's the 20-25 years this these stories were first launched. Maybe it's my personal immersion/boredom with Superman and his various imitators.

Supreme is somewhere between a tribute and a pastiche. The story telling is great for what it is. The world building is wildly varied and satisfying. It feels crowded, maybe even overcrowded with peers and enemies. And just like Superman, the best stories are the ones when the caped crusader is off screen so those secondary characters have room to shine.

But I was expecting more bite. More critique. More meta commentary on the nature show more of supreme power. But maybe Moore already said it all with Dr. Manhattan. show less
