Clarke Sinclair is a Special Agent with the FBI and she and her partner Sam have been tracking a serial killer named Simon Cross for years. Every time they think they can save the girl and catch him they arrive too late. But this time a woman he’s kidnapped doesn’t fit his profile and he’s taken her before he’s finished with the one he already has. He’s changed his MO and Clarke doesn’t know why. All she does know is Cross is doing all of this because of her and she feels he’s building to a grand finale. Will they finally catch him before he kills again or will they themselves be his next victims?
This book is awful and I’m not entirely sure why I kept reading it. Maybe because the chapters not show more involving Clarke are actually pretty good. Every chapter from Clarke’s POV is shit. Seriously. How clichéd can a character be? And omg, the self-flagellating that makes zero difference is unbelievably tedious to slog through. Also, I’ve read about “rogue” FBI/police characters that actually do a whole lot better of straddling the line than her. No superior officer would EVER let her get away with the shit she’s been getting away with. Nope. Can’t suspend my disbelief THAT much. I actually started skimming much of her chapters to get back to Bess and Adelaide. Clarke is completely and totally unlikeable. And then the grand finale? WTF. Am I really supposed to buy that horseshit? I. Can’t. Even. How fucking stupid was that? I do NOT recommend this story. Ever. show less

Intense Cat-and-Mouse Chase!
“The world breaks everyone and afterward many are strong at the broken places. But those that will not break it kills. It kills the very good and the very gentle and the very brave impartially.” —Ernest Hemingway
“It Ends With Her” is a psychological thriller with a tense cat-and-mouse game between a serial killer and an FBI Agent who has been chasing him for years.
If you love books about serial killers, you'll love this one even more with its strong female law enforcement character. Clarke is no ordinary agent. She's smart, tough, and determined to catch Simon, the notorious killer who always manages to slip through her fingers. Simon follows a pattern with every killing, and he loves to taunt show more Clarke with clues that never lead her close enough to save the victim. But this time, Clarke is more determined than ever.
The book could have been paced a little faster, but the ending was worth the wait. Labuskes is an author you want to check out!

Obtained through Amazon First. I brought this along as a 'beach read' for a weekend and couldn't put it down. The intertwined plots were complex and compelling, yet all along we root for the protagonist, Clarke, to win. For those of us in the world of foster parents/children, adoption, etc., for those in the world of spousal (or date) abuse, and for those in the world of self-harm, this story may be intense and very real. It's a compelling story, and the author masterfully weaves a wonderful tale...
I usually love these kinds of books but cannot say the same about this one. I felt that it took too long to get to know the characters. I did not like the main character. I don't mind a flawed character but an FBI agent should at least come across as strong in some ways. I felt she was a very dependent needy, whiny character. I did like Sam but the relationship didn't make much sense. At least the ending did give it a little bit of sense. The killer was crazy an obsessed with the main character and she didn't know why??? At the end you wonder how she wouldn't have known. It wasn't a bad book but it took me a while to get into it and it wasn't something that I want more of. That is what I like in a book. One that makes me want more.
Serial Killer Plays Games With FBI Agents
The story has been told many times. Sam and Clarke (girl not boy) are on the hunt for a serial killer who kidnaps and murders red-headed females. Until now. This last one is blonde and the FBI agents are certain he still has the last red-head who has not been found. He has broken his pattern. Yes, he. They know who he is - Simon.
Sounds captivating right? Not so much. I was sick of hearing Clarke's inner thoughts and flashbacks before I got through half of the book. It was hard soldiering on to finish, because the Clarke parts never end. The backstory with Adelaide and Simon were a lot better and kept my interest as to what would finally happen. Except the author was trying too hard to put those show more "I never saw it coming" moments in. No spoilers but there were too many solutions that never had a build up or foreshadow to make any sense except for the want of a twist ending. It fell flat for me. show less

FBI agent Clarke Sinclair has been tracking serial killer Simon Cross for several years. Simon has been providing her with clues that have been haunting her to the depths of her soul. However, he always succeeds in the murders, breaking Clarke more and more with each victim. Simon has a pattern. This time, however, he has broken it and has changed his timetable. This break in pattern is leading Clarke into a trap. Will she be able to save the latest victim – and herself?
I was so touched by Clarke. She is one tough agent, despite a troubled past. Working alongside her mentor Sam allowed the true depth of her pain become all too real to me. However, it was the connection between all of the characters and the timelines played out that show more really astounded me. It Ends With Her is truly a truly dark thriller that captivated my attention, and yanked on my heartstrings more than once.
Many thanks to Thomas & Mercer and to NetGalley for this book to review. show less

It hits all the thriller beats with a smart premise, but way over the top in every way.
