Normally, I’m not a huge fan of interleaved timelines, because they often seem awkward and contrived, but Zander makes this method propel the story in The Friend. Props for a compelling story, and for LGBTQ characters in a genre (spy/thriller) where they’re lacking. I don’t want to spoil the plot, but I read this over a weekend when the news made it unfortunately timely.
I’m definitely intrigued enough with some of the characters to read the other books in the series.

This review was written for LibraryThing Early Reviewers. With so many international intrigue books on the market today, it can be hard to stand out in the field. I think Zander does just that with his trilogy, so far, of books featuring Klara Walldéen.
This review was written for LibraryThing Early Reviewers. The Friend is a prime example of why I argue that It is important to finish books you start. This is the final entry in a trilogy that started with the Swimmer. I'll warn you this book is very Scandanavian and it's center is a gay relationship that the author writes about in the same language as one would about a hetrosexual relationship. There are quite graphic scenes. That while I believe that they are essential to the story, they almost led to me abandoning thebook in the beginning.
At it's heart The Friend is a thriller in the vein of LeCarre or Ludlum. It's a story that involves the Middle East, Europe, terrorists, and terror plots. The difference between this book and the classic thrillers is that the protagonists behaveb as real show more peopl would. Much of the time they are petrified with fear and doubt. Only through heroic efforts do they make it to the next step. There are no marksman, super sleuths,or martial arts experts in this story. Just ordinary citizens caughgt up in acts in a shadow world that has encroached upon their own.
I recommend that you start this one, and you finish it. The Friend may not hook you from the get go, but it'll provide a very solid ride if you let it. show less

This review was written for LibraryThing Early Reviewers.Turns out to be a better story than I first thought it would. Jacob/Matti is one of the weakest characters I have ever read in a book. His survival is a big part of the story and makes the book quite exceptional even though he's not really that likeable. Klara and George's story is endearing. I do like this author and will read the book written between this one and "The Swimmer", which was excellent.
THE FRIEND, by Joakim Zander, follow two narratives. First is about Jacob Seger, an young and excited new intern at the Swedish embassy in Beirut who wants to make an impact on the world. The second is Klara Walldeen, who recently lost her dear grandfather and returns to Stockholm with her best friend, Gabi, to mourn his death. Both Jacob and Klara quickly become wrapped up in a global conspiracy involving feuding countries, international spying, and looming terrorist attacks.
Zander begins the book by getting to know Jacob and Klara, with loads of backstory and well-defined supporting characters. While the beginning of the book take a while to get moving, there is a certain point where the reader sees where the story is going and why show more we are following these two characters in particular. As any good spy thriller does, there are mysteries and truths that most of the major character's are carrying and Zander strategically doles out those secrets in a pleasing way. There are shocking reveals, character betrayals, and the stakes are constantly building. The climax feels right out of an action movie where at any moment everything could fall apart.
A little slow to start, THE FRIEND builds and builds to an exciting conclusion the keep the reader engaged until the very end. A definite read for anyone who enjoys spy thrillers and novels full of international intrigue.

This is the third installment of this trilogy. I had read Zander's THE SWIMMER but not THE BELIEVER. This did not deter me from getting completely immersed in this thrilling novel. There were references to events that occurred in the second book, which I will now read. There are two plotlines, which are related in alternating chapters. Jacob Seger is a young Swede assigned to work in Beirut for the foreign service. He is eager to advance in his career and leave his past behind. Gabriella and Klara are old friends. The story begins with the two women grieving over the loss of Klara's grandfather. This is a fast-paced story that I could not put down, bringing me into the intriguing word of show more international terrorism. I look forward to reading THE BELIEVER to round out this trilogy. show less
