Now, she spends most of her time observing the park next to her house. When Laila spots a mysterious bird, a dodo named Ralph, the two form an unlikely friendship until Ralph starts to cause trouble and Laila finds the chaos around her growing. elenchus Ness's A Monster Calls and Nunes's Dodo share a broadly similar premise, and a serious consideration of the world as seen by hurt children. Dodo is perhaps suitable for younger readers, but both books are not cartoon-y nor simplistic. The aesthetics styles are distinct, too, though the use of dreamscapes and analogues are similar.

Picked up on sight from the local library for W, he read first without my checking it. W pronounced it "weird: not bad weird, just weird". He then showed me various scenes, specifically panels in which the Dodo was destructive, and the dream sequence (though he didn't identify it as such).

Read myself later: a 6-year-old girl copes with her parents' separation, and subsequent changes in friends and family life, and the bird visits. I especially appreciate the ambiguity as to whether depicted events occurred literally, or stand in for the girl's emotional reality.

Thematic parallels to A Monster Calls, though the underlying story differs.
