Jimena was my favorite character in the series, but because she's so different than the other characters, she doesn't fit as easily into the format of the other books. Jimena is a reformed gangbanger with a drug addicted mother who abandoned her, a father she never knew, a best friend who was shot in a drive-by as a kid, and a gangbanger ex-boyfriend who was murdered on the streets. This background provides her with so much more darkness and maturity than the other girls in the book series, that it requires a tone shift.
While everyone being all optimistic and kind of cheesy works in the first two novels about girls without any real problems, it doesn't quite work in Jimena's story. The book was at its strongest when Jimena was alone or show more with her abuela or ex-boyfriend. Her new love interest and the other daughters are living in a much happier and simple world, so they sound more weird / cheesy when they enter Jimena's. That being said, this book did pull an emotional reaction out of me with Jimena and Veto's storyline. For a YA novelist, Ewing did a great job of telling a story about loving someone and losing them and being delusionally desperate to get them back, no matter what. show less

The third Daughters of the Moon novel centres mostly around Jimina and her power of premonition. Her serious boyfriend Veto was killed a year earlier by being on an enemy gang's territory. His funeral was a closed casket and when he appears out of the blue to Jimena she wonders what really happened. Is he a ghost, has he been in a witness protection programme or is there some other explanation. Unfortunately the reality is worse. He has been brought back by the evil Atrox to try and break up the Daughters of the Moon.
Cassandra is one of the Folowers of the Atrox and has been gaining more power recently. She is not yet immortal, but has had audience with the inner circle and has been granted the ability to go back in time and change one show more event. Karyl and Morgan are helping her and Jimena has a premonition of Cassandra pushing Veto into a massive chasm in the earth. Stanton warns Serena causing her to reveal their secret relationship. Vanessa is having trouble with her boyfriend Michael and Catty just wants a boyfriend. Jimena also has to deal with her emerging feelings for Serena's brother Collin.
This has been my favourite in the series so far. I think it's because of the girls I like Jimena the most. She is tough and gets tempted to go back to her old gang ways which somehow makes her the most down to earth of the group. I look forward to the next in the series which looks to follow Catty next. show less

This time we get a closer look at Jimena. She’s definitely an interesting character, because there’s a lot more to her than meets the eye. And I always enjoy the references to Ancient Greece that factor in to their current problems.
Jimena was once the toughest girl in East L.A. No longer in a gang, she is still feared by many. Nothing scares Jimena except the reappearance of Veto, who was once the love of her life. It scares her, because Veto was killed a year ago by a rival gang. She doesnt know whether to believe if he is really alive or if he's just a ghost.
I would tell my friend, if you like a little mystery, romance, action, and magic they would love this book. It takes you in each of the girls' minds. Q4P3 AHS/Alyssa W
