Description

Towards the end of his stay in the Kreuzlingen clinic, where he was admitted due to his recurrent nervous breakdowns, Aby Warburg decided to write a good-bye speech for the clinic’s patients and doctors. This speech tells of his revealing encounter in 1895 with the Pueblo Indians, describing their dances with live snakes, a magical ceremony that aimed to produce rain. But the ritual of the snake, extreme example of the Indian’s animistic worshipping, is merely the starting point for a show more reflection on the power of imagery and symbolism, which is necessarily tied to art.
