On a cattle drive to New Mexico, Lucky Luke travels through Langtry, home of self-appointed judge Roy Bean. A crook and a cheat who invents laws and concocts offences, Bean arrests Luke and confiscates his herd. But he doesn't count on the arrival of another crook and cheat intent on poaching the old man's game. Det vilde vesten, USA, ca 1880.
Lucky Luke driver en flok kvæg fra Austin, Texas til Silver City, New Mexico. Vest for floden Pecos findes kun lov og retfærdighed i form af "Dommeren" Roy Bean. Roy kombinerer rettergang og saloondrift på bedste vis.
Roy konfiskerer kvæghjorden for den er "nok" stjålen. En mexicaner Jacinto, en bjørn Joe, en stum forsvarer Archie og en bedemand er blandt de medvirkende i retssagen, men Luke stikker af.
Han vender tilbage for at få sin kvæghjord med, men nu dukker en ny dommer, Bad Ticket, op. Roy reagerer med opslag om "Besøg i denne domstol vil medføre bøde". Det bliver hurtigt ulideligt for byens beboere med to konkurrerende dommere, så Luke tvinger dem til en duel på poker. Bad Ticket vinder med 4 esser mod 4 og der er endda 4 mere i spillet. Men Bad Ticket er værre end Roy Bean, så Luke skifter side.
Roy og Luke optræder som spøgelser.
Bad Ticket og bedemanden bliver smidt ud af byen, men kavaleriet dukker op og så bliver Roy Bean også sat på anklagebænken.
Men han er også dommer, så han dømmer sig selv til at afholde sig fra dommergerningen og blot servere øl i saloonen. Lucky Luke drager videre med kvæghjorden og da den er afleveret, rider han ud mod solnedgangen.

Meget skæg lille overvejelse af hvordan man gør, når der er meget langt til civilisationen. ( )
