Fantas Romanc Young Adult Fictio HTML:Instant New York Times and Indie Bestseller!
New York Times bestselling author Renée Ahdieh returns with a sumptuous, sultry and romantic new series set in 19th century New Orleans where vampires hide in plain sight.
/> In 1872, New Orleans is a city ruled by the dead. But to seventeen-year-old Celine Rousseau, New Orleans is a safe haven after she's forced to flee her life as a dressmaker in Paris. Taken in by the sisters of the Ursuline convent in the middle of the carnival season, Celine is quickly enraptured by the vibrant city, from its music to its fancy soirées and even its danger. She becomes embroiled in the city's glitzy underworld, known as La Cour des Lions, after catching the eye of the group's enigmatic leader, Sébastien Saint Germain.
When the body of one of the girls from the convent is found in Sébastien's own lairâ??the second dead girl to turn up in recent weeksâ??Celine battles her attraction to Sébastien and suspicions about his guilt along with the shame of her own horrible secret.
After a third murder, New Orleans becomes gripped by the terror of a serial killer on the looseâ??one who has now set Celine in his sights. As the murderer stalks her, Celine finally takes matters into her own hands, only to find herself caught in the midst of an age-old feud between the darkest creatures of the night, where the price of forbidden love is her life.

* I got this book for review from the publisher*

I was immediately captured by this world form page one. I really loved the setting and found the characters to be super compelling. I also liked how this world was build and the mystery was super engaging. I wish this book had a bit more action throughout the novel. I think this def a slow burn novel and really did like the development of the characters. I think this was a great starter novel and I am super excited to see where book 2 goes. ( )

3.5 stars

I liked it, but I think because I fell into a reading slump soon after starting this (not the book's fault), it affected my rating. I do plan on continuing with the series so I'll reread this one before I go onto the next one and see what my rating is then. Another thing that affected my rating is the major instalove trope. I like the characters, but can we please ditch the instalove trope already?

Edit: This is my second time reading this, and I'm bumping up my rating to 4 stars. I do think because I was starting to fall into a reading slump the last time I read this, it effected my rating a little bit. I do like Renée's writing style, but I know it won't appeal to everyone. It is very descriptive, so if that's not your thing you might want to skip this. I love the atmosphere and tone in this book. It's got that gothic, supernatural feel. I honestly don't understand anyone who says there are no vampires in this book or that they only appear at the very end. Just because a character doesn't come right out and say "hey I'm vampire," doesn't mean you can't figure out who the vampires in this book are. Also, just because we don't see them engaging in what we think are typically "vampire activities" (aside from the killer), doesn't mean they're not there.

I enjoyed this book, my only two issues were the pacing, especially in the middle, and it still feels like instalove to me. Other than that, I think it's well done and sets up nicely for the sequel, which I can't wait to start today. ( )

This was good. 3.5 stars
It started slow, and I felt like it kept trying to pick up, but I kept losing interest. It was like a roller coaster where I went from loving it to wondering if I should grab another book instead.
I’ll definitely read the second one though. ( )
