Read as an e-book. This is a blank verse novel about growing up and accepting that there is only so much you can do to change the world around you. 14 year old Zeke is living with his mother and her dead-beat boyfriend. He wishes things could go back to the way they were when he lived with his Dad close to the woods. He decides to help his mother's expenses and with the dream of saving to buy a car, to take a job after school at the local pizza shop. Whilst working there he sees the harsh realities of life, falls in love with a girl from college and soon realises that the owners are paying the workers a pittance with no sick leave and harsh conditions. This book is about Zeke being exposed to the realities of adult life and comes to a head when all the money he has saved is stolen by his mother's boyfriend to buy her an engagement ring. A very quick read ( about an hour) , the novel is blank verse ( does not rhyme) and moves very quickly. For Year 8s upwards. ( )
