My Weird School #15: Mr. Macky Is Wacky!Author: Dan Gutman
Publisher: Harper Collins 2006
Realistic Fiction. 112 pg

Part of a series of a classroom's "weird" adventures. President's Day is coming up and all the children at Ella Mentry are researching for their oral reports on a President of their choice. A few fun events take place between the assigning and actual giving of reports. There is a brawl between Washington and Lincoln at an assembly and a ferret is elected school president. Throughout the book fun little tid bits about past presidents is shared. This is a good book perhaps for someone who really isn't interested in school or reading. It captures how a child might fantasize about "weird" things happening at their school to liven up the day a bit. You might be able to say a theme is Life is a little Weird. The main character finds many things and people weird. At these young ages children tend to determine anything unfamiliar or different as weird or odd. It a nice book for transitioning to chapter books. There are a few short chapters and a small illustration every 3 or 4 pages which can help children begin to rely less on illustration and more on their own imagination.
