Woke: A Guide to Social Justice

This is a short wickedly satirical book poking fun at the extremes of the "Woke" movement which often demonstrates how a ridiculous obsession with identity politics can distort and frustrate sound and decent aims to achieve justice and improve the lives of marginalised groups. Contrary to what readers might expect, the author is actually on the left, not on the right. A bit of light relief, though also a bit depressing.

I'm grateful that Doyle decided to start writing serious books, as this effort at comedy is just boring. I think Titania McGrath is really much better on Twitter than in book form. On Twitter, she can be hilarious. I wonder why the difference?

This is a fun book, a satire written by Andrew Doyle to poke the bear, that is poke social justice warriors. Doyle is a stand up comedian, a musical playwright, a journalist with a PhD in early Renaissance poetry (Oxford) and a free speech advocate. He is Irish, opinionated, and highly verbal and interesting to watch being interviewed on the many podcast interviews of late. He started a Twitter account of Titania Mcgrath and it has been swamped with followers (600,000). I did want to read his/her book but do prefer his interviews!

5 stars for concept but basically unreadable. This works great as funny tweets, but is unreadably painful as book length, which shows just how unbearable it is as a slightly heightened form of the beliefs of a vocal 5% of society.

Hilariously enough, the Guardian gave this a rather sniffy review, totally unrelated I'm sure to the fact that the book lampoons a number of their self important columnists.

Short, finished it in an afternoon. You see what's coming, but still amusing. Interesting to see how other people are reacting or reviewing.
