Přesně 13. července 1772, tedy do roka a do dne od chvíle, kdy se James Cook vrátil do Anglie s tím, že pro britskou Korunu získal Austrálii a Nový Zéland, vypravil král do Tichomoří další dvě lodě, Resolution a Adventure, aby Cook objevné putování po jižní polokouli završil. Tři roky trvající plavba zůstala doposud největší výpravou, kterou kdy kdo do jižních vod Indického, Tichého a Atlantského oceánu podnikl. Žádná jiná plachetní loď se nedokázala zakrojit tak hluboko do ker jižního pólu.
