Description

"This book is about the Stonewall Riots, a series of spontaneous, often violent demonstrations by members of the gay (LGBTQ+) community in reaction to a police raid that took place in the early morning hours of June 28, 1969, at the Stonewall Inn in the Greenwich Village neighborhood of Manhattan, New York City. The Riots are attributed as the spark that ignited the LGBTQ+ Movement. The author describes American gay history leading up to the Riots, the Riots themselves, and the aftermath, show more and includes her interviews of people involved or witnesses, including a woman who was ten at the time. Profusely illustrated, the book includes contemporary photos, newspaper clippings among other period objects. Easy to understand history of LGBTQ+ past and struggle to gain rights and equality. I liked that the book used photos and items from the times and explained how they were used in the fight or oppression of homosexuals. I also liked that there were explanations of what life was like for them and how homosexuals started to organize and stand up to the police. There is a bit of humor as she explains the kick lines. I can picture that in my mind. I appreciated that she did not whitewash how society treated and abused gays, lesbians, and transgendered people. Nor did she deny that there were divisions amongst the different groups trying to get their rights and equality for homosexuals. This is good start for 10 & up to understand the LGBTQ+ show more fight and how far they have come. show less
4.2 Enjoyed this! An important look back at the Stonewall Inn and events that lead to the LGBTQ revolution we’re still experiencing today. The treatment some people endured in the 1960s and earlier is appalling. We still have a ways to go but the country has come a long way in terms of equality and fair treatment for people with various lifestyles and sexual preferences.
***History of the Stonewall riots organized by objects that you might see in a museum…signs, leaflets, photographs, etc. Includes index and extensive bibliography. I was distracted by a photo on page 25 labeled Fred Kameny but the accompanying article talks about Frank Kameny…there was no mention of Fred…a typo?
The Stonewall Uprising included a series of protests by the gay community in the summer of 1969 after a police raid in New York City. Many historians consider this event to have sparked the LGBTQ+ movement that continues today.
