A friend described this book to me as a typical moving-to-a-new-school novel but told through poetry and computer code. It is exactly that and it is quite charming and lovely. No knowledge of poetry, coding, or music theory is needed, but some of the wordplay rewards looking up terms. ( )

Emmy moves with her family from Wisconsin to San Francisco, California. She is in 6th grade, and both of her parents are professional musicians. However, Emmy has tried many instruments and has terrible stage fright - music is not for her. Will she ever find her place in the world? And why do people in California eat so many grains? Emmy is lost until she finds herself in Ms. Delaney's classroom. Emmy finally finds her instrument and music; a computer programming code.

A fun book that mixes coding, music and poetry beautifully. The way the author writes makes it interesting and enjoyable. ( )

Emmy is the new girl at her school, having moved to San Francisco with her parents from Wisconsin. Her parents are professional musicians but while Emmy’s always loved music the talent did not pass on to her. Emmy struggles to find her place and new friends at her school. Her school schedule includes a computer coding class, taught by a new teacher Ms Delaney, formerly of a Silicon Valley tech firm. Gradually Emmy discovers an interest in coding and finds a way to dovetail it with her passion for music. Appreciated the weaving together of Emmy's interests in music and coding and the incorporation of coding into the poetry which sort of helped me understand coding. ( )
