My first ever George Sand novel. I enjoyed it though I had a sense of Wuthering Heights about it, minus the generational revenge fantasy, but with the two strong willed people trying to understand how they will make lives together work. I did get lost in some of the side characters but the whole story was fascinating. Worth finding some more George Sand to read.
Mauprat (1837) is the romantic tale of a "wild" man civilized by the woman he loves. Deeply engaged with Rousseau's pedagogical treatise 'Emile, and with contemporary debate concerning inherited and acquired traits and tendencies, Mauprat is an expression of Sand's Utopian vision of a
relationship governed by free choice and equality.
Liked it, but it was heck of frustrating. Dang! The games you had to play in the name of love. I guess it's the same now, which is why I refuse to be anything but soltera.
1404 Mauprat, by George Sand translated from the French by Stanley Young (read 28 Aug 1976) While reading a biography of George Sand (by Curtis Cate) I thought I should read something by the subject thereof, so I read this, written in 1836. One thing is for sure, Sand never had a course in creative writing. The technique seems so bad. There are some good touches, but the book I guess is out-of-date. It reminded me more of Chateaubriand than of Dumas, Hugo, or Balzac, or Flaubert--and yet there is some of that Gallic disregard for logic, that reckless exaggeration in all these authors. Mauprat is the story of Bernard Mauprat, raised by a grandfather and seven wicked uncles. He is violent, but falls in love with Ednee, the loveliest woman show more in existence. She won't marry him till he becomes more able to be lived with. He goes off to fight in the American Revolution, returns to France, is condemned to death for shooting Ednee, is saved when it is shown one of the wicked uncles shot her, and lives happily wedded to Ednee till her death. It is contrived sounding and lacks credibility. He brings back parrots from his time in the US. show less
Magnifique.

George Sand began life as Aurore Dupin, the daughter of a count and a dressmaker. Educated both on her aristocratic grandmother's estate and in a Parisian convent, at 18 she married Casimer Dudevant, a provincial gentleman whose rough temperament was the opposite of her own, and from whom she obtained a separation several years later. At 31 she show more moved to Paris, where she changed her name and plunged into the bohemian world of French romanticism. Frequently dressed in men's clothing, she participated actively in literary debates, cultural events, and even the revolution of 1848. Sand was friend and correspondent with many of the major artists and writers of her age, including Balzac, Flaubert, and Liszt. Her love affairs with the poet Musset and the composer Chopin were the stuff of legend, chronicled in her own Story of My Life. Sand's immensely popular novels ranged from sentimental stories of wronged women, to utopian socialist fictions, such as her masterpiece in Consuelo, 1842, to explorations of pastoral themes written when she retired, late in life, to her estate in Berry. Though frequently dismissed as overblown or too sentimental, Sand's fiction has recently undergone a revaluation, emerging as an influential body of women's writing. As both a writer and an intellectual personality, Sand is a central figure in nineteenth-century French cultural life. George Sand died in 1876 (Bowker Author Biography) show less
