Description

Much like the fencer who must constantly negotiate her stance towards her opponent, this debut collection from Mary Jean Chan deftly examines relationships at once conflictual and tender. Themes of queerness, post-colonialism, language, psychoanalysis and cultural history emerge throughout the book by means of a personal, maternal and national biography, conveyed by a polyphony of female voices. The result is a series of poems that feel urgent and hard-hitting as Chan constantly keeps her show more readers on their toes, dazzling and devastating by turn. show less

This is a book of beautiful verse on a range of subjects, but mostly relationships and the inetrsection of personal and wider histories. Chan uses various forms, but never just for effect. And there is a pervading humanity and reluctance to judge.
