This second cyberspace thriller in the Captain Chase series takes up right where the first book left off. Both books are uniquely spaced-out (pun intended), so you'll be lost if you don't read them in order. Calli again gets plugged into all kinds of super secret electronic devices. Most of the story occurs during a blizzard while Captain Chase chases Lex, the boy-genius, and battles arch-rival Neva Rong. This author has undoubtedly become fond of acronyms. They are entertaining in a juvenile kind of way. ( )

The 2nd Cornwell foray into "sci-fi" and it, like the first, is unreadable.
Ugh.
DNF. ( )

I had my reservations about "Quantum". I was willing to overlook how much was not explained, because I believed "Spin" would give me the resolution I wanted as a reader. But I couldn't finish "Spin". We all know how acronym-happy the Federal government is. Nevertheless, the author's overabundance of whimsical acronyms for various pieces of advanced technology developed by the government just felt silly to me. And there was simply not enough desire on my part for understanding how everything would play out in "Spin" to keep reading it. ( )

Crammed with acronyms to make all sorts of high tech gear. The protagonist Karma is talked with nullifying the efforts of a shadowy and unexplained figure named Neva Wrong.
The story isn't as strong as the imagined high tech gear. A lot of details about space flight and for some reason units are given in both metric and British. ( )

Cornwell, Patricia. Spin. Captain Chase No. 2. Thomas & Mercer, 2021.
Spin, the second volume in Patricia Cornwell’s Captain Chase Series picks up right where the Quantum left off and finally resolves most of the plot issues left open in the first book. Cornwell’s strength as a writer is creating engaging, thrill-ride scenes with well-researched forensic detail. For example, I have seldom seen the minutiae of a a space launch described better, including the icky details of a prelaunch treatment to empty the digestive tract to minimize the effects of nausea. The book has had very mixed reviews, mostly from longtime fans of the Scarpetta series who will accept no substitutes. Some of it does seem over-the-top, but I’ll read the next one. Three point five stars rounded up. ( )
