Arthur Fleck (Phoenix) vive en Gotham con su madre, y su única motivación en la vida es hacer reír a la gente. Actúa haciendo de payaso en pequeños trabajos, pero tiene problemas mentales que hacen que la gente le vea como un bicho raro. Su gran sueño es actuar como cómico delante del público, pero una serie de trágicos acontecimientos le hará ir incrementando su ira contra una sociedad que le ignora. (FILMAFFINITY)

Todd Phillips a réalisé un grand film baroque, très bien filmé et superbement porté par l'interprétation géniale de Joachin Phoenix. Omniprésent, il se livre à un hallucinant jeu d'acteur qui scotche le spectateur du début à la fin. Doté d'un jeu à la fois subtil et puissant, il attendrit, bouleverse et inquiète tout à la fois.
Clown affreusement sombre se faisant virer d'une boîte minable, cet "homme qui rit" tragique s'occupe d'une mère recluse qui le surnomme "Happy". Rejeté de toutes parts par une société violente, absurde et inhumaine, il sombre de plus en plus dans la folie. Dans cette descente aux enfers, c'est par la violence du meurtre qu'il pourra ressentir un certain sentiment de puissance capable de l'extraire de son inexistence.
Sans le travers de certains excès d'un cinéma américain (trop démonstratif), le film serait presque parfait. Par l'interprétation hors normes de Joachin Phoenix (auprès duquel même l'immense Robert de Niro pâlit), sa mise en scène, la beauté et la fluidité de ses plans, l'ambiguïté de la narration.
Un voyage tout en tension dans la vie d'un homme malmené dont l'absence d'amour rendra fou et désespérément violent. D'une grande noirceur, le film exhibe une société plus cruelle, plus vile et plus dégoûtante que les monceaux d'ordures et les rats géants qui infestent Gotham City. ( )
